around the wheels and in the wheel arches as well as the interactions with the underbody flows and the vehicle wake. Autonomous temperature and flow measurement
systems can also be used to test and tune water, air or oil cooling systems. Water
supply and discharge systems designed to simulate the effect of rain with or without
wind and devices capable of reproducing snowy conditions are available in some
installations (see Sect. 3.2.2.).
3.3.2 Long Test Section Wind Tunnel
The Institut Aérotechnique (IAT) at Saint-Cyr-l’École is equipped with facilities for
studies in external or internal aerodynamics or related fields of aeroelasticity, with
applications in various sectors mainly in aeronautics, automotive, railway and civil
engineering applications.
The Long Test Section Wind Tunnel or SVL (Soufflerie Longue Veine) is a
closed circuit wind tunnel with a 15 m long test section equipped with a rolling
road of 6 m in length and working width of 0.4 m, recreating the ground effect with
rotating wheels (see Fig. 3.45). The tunnel was originally designed to study the drag
on different types of trains (see Fig. 3.46) and its dimensions also make it suitable
for civil engineering studies.
