3.2.5 Dual Purpose Aerodynamic and Acoustic Wind Tunnel
The SAA (Soufflerie Aero-Acoustique) aeroacoustic wind tunnel at ISAESUPAERO is a research wind tunnel with an anechoic chamber of a volume of
8 × 9 × 9 m
3 , for aeroacoustic studies in open jet mode, and the detachable test
section of 1.8 m
2 and 6 m long can be used for conventional aerodynamic studies
(see Fig. 3.43). The wind tunnel is driven by a fan powered by a 900 kW DC motor.
In both the open jet and closed test section configuration the flow velocity can be
continuously varied from 0 to 80 m/s (Mach number 0 to 0.24), corresponding to the
speeds of civil transport aircraft in the landing and take-off phases.
The aeroacoustic circuit is equipped with acoustically treated walls and baffles
limiting the propagation of the noise generated by the fan in the anechoic chamber.
The plenum is equipped with several turbulence grids, a honeycomb and acoustically
treated walls which, combined with the high contraction ratio of the convergent
section, provide a turbulence intensity of less than 0.1% in an open or guided test
section.
The side walls of the closed test section are either opaque or transparent removable
panels adapted according to the tests. The anechoic chamber is equipped with noise
