The remarkable decline in price is complemented by an increase in the number of producing companies and their forecasted product lines intended to
meet the increasing demands for ES devices in the future [26].
A number of manufacturers around the world develop ES products
including Maxwell Technologies and Epcos in North America; Cap-XX in
Australia; NEC Tokin and Panasonic in Japan; and Nesscap in South Korea.
See Table 5.6 for a complete list.
Several of these companies strive to manufacture cells over a range of
capacitance values, voltages, and dimensions to address the integration of
ESs in portable electronics (cameras, laptops, mobile PDAs, and cell phones)
and meet demands for high loads of uninterrupted power and load leveling. Table 5.7 lists the performance parameters of these manufacturers. The
largest market for ES is expected to be the automotive industry. Regenerative
brake energy systems for micro, mini, mid, and full size hybrids and the
required stabilization of power train systems against voltage sags currently
drive the demand for ES innovation. The major markets of three companies
are described below to demonstrate conditions in the current market.
Maxwell Technologies — Maxwell has an extensive history of developing
and manufacturing power products. It produces a diverse range of small
(prismatic and cylindrical) and large cells (cylindrical) to match competitors’ products. Cell capacitances range from 5 to 3000 F, with larger bank
