14.1 Berlin, August 1914
Whether or not the Le Rossignols had ever contemplated leaving Berlin
1 after
the events in Sarajevo, their decision was made for them by the British
declaration of war on Germany; a declaration that immediately confined all
British nationals to the German state. The suddenness of the British entry
into the war however, meant that Germany at first had no real idea what to do
with such people, and it wasn’t until mid August 1914 that a vague set of
guidelines emerged outlining the responsibilities and the freedom(s)—or
otherwise—permitted to those who had now become ‘enemy’ citizens. In the
