Chapter 2
Description of the Wolfram
SystemModeler
2.1 General Concepts
This chapter will allow the reader to briefly get acquainted with the basics of working
in Wolfram SystemModeler [1]. You will learn how to use the Model Center to create
your own model with components from the Modelica standard library, how to create
your own components, and how to run a computational experiment using Simulation
Center.
Wolfram SystemModeler is an interactive graphical environment designed for
computer modeling of complex multi-level physical and other systems based on the
Modelica language and allowing for computational experiments with the models
obtained.
Wolfram SystemModeler allows the user to create system models using an extensive library of ready-made physical and logical components written in the Modelica
language [2, 3] when creating component models using the drag-and-drop approach.
The basis of creating your own models in the SystemModeler environment is the
use of the object-oriented Modelica language.
Modelica is a high-level declarative language for describing mathematical models.
It is usually applied to engineering systems and makes it easy to describe the behavior
of various types of technical components (e.g., springs, resistors, couplings, etc.).
These components can then be combined into subsystems and systems with a very
complex architecture.
Modelica is useful in our case for several reasons. First of all, it is technically very
convenient. Using complex ready-made algorithms, Modelica compilers allow engineers to focus on the mathematical description of the behavior of high-level components with the possibility of high-performance numerical experiments, without going
into solving differential–algebraic equations, performing symbolic manipulations,
working numerical solvers, generating code, post-processing, etc.
