11.1.3 Sectors Needing Resilience
Disturbances or shocks, such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, economic crisis,
whenever they occur, do affect the performance of existing infrastructure goods or
services (to name, just a few, roads, drains, buildings, hospitals, industry). The
performance of these sectors gives a good idea of the resilience of such systems or
sectors.
Table 11.1 provides a list of infrastructure systems which affect everyday life, and
which may be critical in enabling a normal day’s work. Therefore, it is not difficult,
once it is understood, to extend the concept of resilience to the range of sectors, as
shown in Fig. 11.5.
