Chapter 9
Quality and Reliability of Infrastructure
Infrastructure design is about creating a solution that not
only meets the stated requirements but anticipates the
unstated current and future requirements through flexibility
and scalability. The well designed infrastructure enables
business as it is now and as it changes in the future in a cost
effective and efficient manner.
Matt Theurer
Infrastructure design involves applying experience and
knowledge, in a combination of art and science, to produce
efficient solutions that meet requirements while mitigating
risks and accounting for constraints. An infrastructure
architect must be able to effectively communicate and justify
the decisions that affect each aspect of the work while
instilling confidence that the proposed solution will succeed.
Doug Baer
If you fail to design an infrastructure with redundancy,
availability, manageability, performance, and security, your
infrastructure design will fail.
Todd Simmons
A common mistake that people make when trying to design
something completely foolproof is to underestimate the
ingenuity of complete fools.
Douglas Adams
Quality means doing it right when no one is looking.
Henry Ford
The unavoidable price of reliability is simplicity.
C. A. R. Hoare
The quality of an infrastructure can be determined or assessed through several
performance characteristics that contribute to an overall performance satisfying a
customer’s requirements. These characteristics will change with the age of the
