19.4 Conclusion
Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) analysis provides a guidance to the decision
makers to discover the most suitable and optimum solution to the problem in question.
The problems related to environmental sector have a wide spectrum of criteria having
sometimes conflict with each other.
In this context, the study reflected this new approach for the evaluation and optimization of the wastewater management for a paint industry; It involved an in-plant
survey identifying individual waste streams for different processes. Characterization and treatability studies were conducted on these segregated waste streams. The
resulting treatment scheme involved ten different technical alternatives related to
the operational conditions. An evaluation was performed using a multiple-criteria
decision tool by analyzing physical footprint and performance of the treatment, chemicals used, the sludge produced, the energy consumed, which defined a sustainable
wastewater management involving the optimal treatment configuration.
