16 Comparative Analysis for Irrigation Water Application Methods …

the alternatives and minimum value of the alternatives where the aim of the criteria
is minimization and maximization respectively. Positive ideal solution is termed the
best option, but it is very difficult in a real life problem to have any option having
best values in terms of each criterion. With this, the TOPSIS model bring about
a solution and regard any preferred alternative as the best when it is closer to the
positive ideal solution and far away from the negative ideal solution. All this is done
in terms of what is called Euclidian distance. From this we can understand that since
the Relative closeness to the positive ideal solution is a rate that shows the closeness
to the positive ideal solution while considering the closeness to the negative ideal
solution, it gives the net ranking results. To rank a set of criteria, we need to convert
some criteria as some are quantifiable while other may be qualitative. To do this, a
cardinal scale of 0–5 is used (0 representing the worst and 5 representing the best) to
transform all qualitative criteria to quantitative values, as shown in Table 16.1. The
importance weights of the criteria has been defined based on the fuzzy scale (Nuhu
2020) corresponding to the opinion of the experts (Table 16.2).
After collecting all the quantitative and the qualitative data for different irrigation
water application methods, the MCDM tool TOPSIS first normalize all the data as
shown in Table 16.3.
16.4 Results and Discussion
For the interpretation of the result, better alternatives are observed with a higher
value of the relative closeness. In this study, Table 16.4 shows the distance of the
alternative from both the positive and negative ideal solutions. Table 16.5. provides
the ranking of irrigation water application methods with basin method being the best
method and most preferred alternative according to TOPSIS. Basin is having a score
of 0.6097 and ranked as the best after considering all the criteria used in this study.
Basin method is good and requires a level soil surface with uniform soil texture and
adequate water supply. Followed by boarder method with a score of 0.5201, which
is also a good irrigation method for level soils according to many literatures and can
be used in both developed and developing countries as less energy is required by this
methods. The least preferred method is drip which requires more cost of installation,
more energy, more supervision and its requirement to clean and less turbid water
compared to both the latter methods. Selecting an irrigation system to use is very
difficult, as this varies with the peoples decisions.
The weight of the importance has been selected according to the expert’s opinion.
Weights can also be altered by decision makers according to their needs for better
ranking result and on considering some other factors such as cost of land, season
variations and many more.
