evaluation criteria such as capital cost, maintenance and operation cost, pathogen
removal efficiency, system reliability, operational simplicity, safety risk, disinfectant
residue formation and undesirable byproduct formation was used. The VIKOR analysis showed that ultraviolent radiation is the most preferable disinfection method
and chlorine dioxide is the least preferable disinfectant.

12.1 Introduction
Water is one of vital and abundant resource on the earth surface which all living beings
are depends ant on it. However, the occurs contamination of water resources because
of improper waste water disposal to water bodies, industrialization and increasing
population (Gelete et al. 2020). Fresh water is depleting and limited. Getting access
for safe drinking water is the main issue worldwide particularly in rural areas and
developing countries. Millions of people globally are exposed to waterborne disease
because of lack of access to safe drinking water (Song et al. 2016). Therefore, water
has to be treated before supplying it to the consumers. During water treatment, water
must pass through a number of steps to get rid of from chemical, physical and
biological pollutants (Gelete et al. 2020).
Disinfection is one of those stages of water treatment which protects human health
by inactivates and kills waterborne and harmful microorganisms in the drinking
water before it is being supplied for the consumers (Huertas et al. 2008). Thus, it is
vital step in treatment process of municipal water supply due to its importance in
removing biological impurities from drinking water (Sun et al. 2019). Disinfection is
commonly considered as the standard treatment process of drinking water, swimming
pool and wastewater treatment. The commonly used disinfection techniques used in
drinking water includes ultraviolet radiation, chlorine, ozonation, chloramine and
chlorine dioxide (Richardson 1998). These methods are widely used throughout the
world even though each of the have their own weakness and strengths. Also, water
users have concerns about the reliability, efficiency and toxic byproduct formed from
disinfection process (Gelete et al. 2020). Therefore, designing of water treatment
system and selecting the appropriate disinfection method is one of the important task
of engineers (Avramenko et al. 2010).
Selecting the best method of drinking water disinfection before designing and
implementing of any water treatment plant is crucial. If there are different water
disinfection methods, it is challenging for the decision makers to decide which one
is to be selected because of multitude of criteria’s which is a multi-criteria decision making problem. There are different methods used for ranking and selection
of the best among the alternatives. Multi-criteria decision-making methods such
VlseCriterion Optimization and Compromise Solution in Serbian (VIKOR) can be
successfully used to select the best alternative among the competing methods. The
VIKOR technique was devoted foe multi-criteria complex problems optimization.
