When disconnection events were thought to be exclusively related to
interplanetary magnetic field boundary crossings it was asked whether such a
crossing has influence on charged dust. Horanyi and Mendis (1987) posed this
question noting that because of the reversal of the magnetic field, the convectional
electric field in the flowing plasma also changes direction. This leads to the reversal
of the electrodynamic acceleration of a charged dust grain as a magnetic sector
boundary sweeps by. Modelling suggested that the wavy appearance of the dust tail
of C/1965 S1 Ikeya-Seki might have been caused by related effects.
