26.5.3 Department of Mineral and Geoscience (DMG)
DMG is a key agency in the national peatland fire prevention programme. It has been
contributing to the DOE on building tube well to prevent peatland fire. Besides
serving the purpose of putting out fires, the water from the tube well could be used
during a prolonged drought to rewet the drained and dried peatlands. DMG has been
given the role and responsibility of finding underground water sources and
constructing tube wells and subsequently support operating the wells to pump
water into dried peatlands during drought season.
Water pumping will be executed in the event of a water level drop in the peat
layer up to 0.5 m from the ground level and when there is peat fires incident. The
purpose of activating the operation of the tube well for pumping water is to raise the
water level in the drainage to rewet the surface of the peat to prevent any fire
occurrence. Groundwater from these wells will also be used by the Fire and Rescue
