availability (Bagg and Neilands 1987) and (2) reduction of toxic compounds (Khan

9.3 Development of PGPR as a Liquid Organic Biofertilizer
Sustainable agriculture would ideally produce good crop yields with minimal impact
on ecological factors such as soil fertility. According to the previous section, PGPR
for achieving ISR and IST is necessary for adverse environments such as tropical
peatland, poor nutrients, and low oxygen conditions under high groundwater level
(GWL). It is developing a new culture system called AeroHydro Culture even in
these worst growth conditions. When the peatland surface has been disturbed by
deforestation, drainage, fire, and a heavy dosage of agrochemical (pesticide and
herbicide) and inorganic fertilizers, it will cause serious PGPR loss and nutrient loss
at the land surface. Therefore, PGPR is necessary to recover the land surface
ecosystem in disturbed peatland. As LIPI has been developing several types of
PGPR based organic biofertilizer, it was applied to the test field of AeroHydro
Culture.
9.3.1 Innovation of Liquid Organic Biofertilizer (LOB) from
the Test Tube to the Real Field Applications
and Commercialization
LIPI has been developing an innovative PGPR based organic biofertilizer such as
LOB-Beyonic-StarTmik LIPI (LOB-BS). In this paper, LOB-BS is used because this
PGPR has been applied with great effect on the growth and productivity of plants
and crops in the field, not only in the laboratory, of which technology on how to use
it is also propagated to local farmers for very low cost (only material cost). LOBBeyonic-LIPI (LIPI registration) is developed using applied biotechnology with the
motto of “beyond bio-organic,” indicating the spirit of innovation for conservation
of eco-environment system and for supporting sustainable development of agriculture and forestry. Furthermore, LOB-BS, based on native microorganisms in Indonesian, has been isolated and screened from various Indonesian ecosystems. Thus,
LOB-BS contains selected superior PGPRs from various Indonesian environments.
It is well known that Indonesia has various ecosystems, including peat ecosystems,
which showed great biodiversity, including microorganisms. There are many different species of microorganisms interacting with other creatures, which create mutual
interaction networks for maintaining and influencing the whole balance of the
ecosystem.
The liquid organic biofertilizer (LOB) inoculant contains microorganisms with
functions on nitrogen-fixing, phosphate solubilization, organic acid secretion, and
