15. Energy of flowing water is one of the most popular sources of renewable energy
all over the World. In Poland there are difficult landscape conditions to build a
large hydropower plant so there are only 13 power plants with nominal capacity
over 10 MW.
16. Possibilities to utilize waterways are sought in their touristic and recreational
exploitation. There is an increasing interest of tourists and residents in the
riverside space as a place of rest and recreation in Poland.
17. Plant irrigation in Poland has a supplementary character. The production effects
depend significantly on soil and rainfall conditions over the period of high
water needs of crops. Production and economic efficiency of agricultural crops
condition the development of irrigation systems and hence water consumption
whitin the area.
18. The maintenance of water using in all Member States of European Union is
focus on the rational use and protection of water resources in accordance with
the principle of sustainable development.
21.3 Conclusions
In total, the book “Management of Water Resources in Poland” consists of 5 parts.
In the first part, there are perface and introduction. The second part discusses water
resources in Poland water resources and the third part discusses changes of flows in
Polish rivers. The fourth part concerns the economic importance of water resources,
while fifth part contains conclusions.
The following findings could be reported based on the chapters of this volume.
1. The lack of integrated management of water resources in Poland resulted from
the division of competences between various institutions, which led to conflicts
and negligence in water management. It was only the implementation of the
new Water Law in 2017 that initiated the reform in water management. As
part of this reform, a single institution responsible for water management was
established – Pa´ nstwowe Gospodarstwo Wodne – Wody Polskie (which one
may translate as the National Water Holding – Polish Water). This institution
started its operations on January 1, 2018. Its division follows the division of the
country by the river catchments. Due to the short operation time, the assessment
of its activities can be done in a few years. Currently, the most urgent need from
the holding is to prepare a generally available hydrological database.
2. Water resources in Poland are extremely low compared to other European countries, which mainly results from climatic and hydrogeological conditions. Water
resources are shrinking as a result of water intake for commercial use and for
supplying the population for centuries. That is why it is so important to protect
the resources and preserve their good quality.
