Chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, organic esters, aromatic hydroxy
compounds,a nd certain ketones have an adverse effect on neoprene
and, consequently,o nlyl imited serviceability can be expected with them.
Highly oxidizing acid and salt solutions also cause surfaced eterioration
andl osso fs trength. Included in thisc ategory aren itrica cida nd
concentrated sulfuric acid. Table 6.7 provides the compatibility of neoprene
with selected corrodents. Reference [1]provides am ore detailed listing.
The advantages of neoprene include its good chemical resistance, heat
resistance to 2008 F/938 C, good oil resistance, betterr esistance to ozone,
sunlight, and weather than natural rubber, its excellent abrasion resistance,
and the fact it is unaffected toy cold weather, rapidtemperature changes, or
mechanical stresses.
On the negative side is the fact that it is more expensive than natural
rubber andismoredifficult to apply.
Typical applications include caustics torage and transportationt anks,
sulfuric acidpickle tanks, chemical process and storage tanks, and miscelleneous process equipment accessories.
6.5.4B utyl Rubber
The maximum temperature that butyl rubber (IIR)c an be exposed to on
ac ontinuous basis is 250–3008 F( 120–1488 C). Butyl rubber is very nonpolar.
It has exceptional resistance to dilute mineral acids, alkalies, phosphate ester
oils, acetone, ethylene, ethylene glycol, and water.R esistance to concentrated acids, except nitric and sulfuric, is good. It is attacked by petroleum
oils, gasoline, and most solvents(exceptoxygenated solvents) but is resistant
to swelling by vegetable and animal oils.
Refer to Table6 .8 for the compatibility of butyl rubberw ith selected
corrodents. Reference [1]p rovides am ored etailed listing. Butyl rubber
linings nave the following advantages:
Unaffected by cold water or rapid temperature changes
Heat resistant to 2008 F/938 C
Resistanttoo zone, sunlight, and aging
Possessedo fgood chemical and gaseous permeation resistance
Resistanttow ater and oxygenated solvents
Resistanttos liding abrasion
Able to be used for hydrochloric acid
Limitations of butyl rubber are:
Not flameo roil resistant
More costly and difficult to apply than natural rubber
Corrosion of Linings and Coatings
