chlorosulfonic acids.T heirs olubility in low-molecular-weight ketones is
an advantagei np roducing solution coatings of fluoroelastomers. Refer to
Table 4.21 for the compatibility of fluoroelastomers with selected corrodents
and Reference [1] for additional listings.
The chemical stability of these elastomers is an importantp roperty for
their use as protective linings. Applications include liningsf or power
stations tacks operated with high sulfur fuels, and tank linings fort he
chemical industry.
4.10.19 PolyvinylideneFluoride
PolyvinylideneF luoride (PVDF) is ah omopolymer of 1:1 difluoroethane
with alternating CH 2 and CF 2 groups along the polymer chain. These groups
impart au niquep olarity that influencesi ts solubility.T he polymer has
the characteristic stability of fluoropolymers when exposed to aggressive
chemical and thermal conditions.
PVDF is manufactured undert he tradename of Kynar by Elf Atochem,
Solef by Solvay,H ylar by Ausimont U.S.A., and Super Pro and ISO by
Asahi/Amarica.
PVDF can be used in applications intended for repeated contact with food
per Title 21, CodeofFederal Regulations Chapter1.Part 177.2520.Itisalso
permitted for use in processing or storage areas in contact with meat or
poultry foodp roducts prepared under federal inspection according to the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.). Use is also permitted under “3-A
Sanitary Standards for Multiple-Use Plastic Materials Used as Product
Contact Surfaces for Dairy Equipment” Serial No. 2000.
PVDF linings have an operating temperature range from K 4 8 F(K 208 C) to
2808 F( 1388 C). Coating thickness range from 0.010 to 0.040 in.
Polyvinylidene fluoride is resistant to most acids, alkalies,a liphatic and
aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and strong oxidizingagents. Highly polar
solvents, such as acetone, and ethyl acetate may cause swelling. When used
with strong alkalies, stress cracking results. Refer to Table 4.22 for the
compatibility of PVDF with selected corrodents and Reference [1] for amore
complete listing.
Typical applications include liningv essels, agitators, pump housings,
centrifuge housings, piping, and dust collectors. Previously glass-lined
tanks and accessories can be refurbished with PVDF.
4.10.20 Isophthalic Polyester
Thei sophthalicp olyestersu se isophthalica cidi np lace of phthalic
anhydrides as the saturated monomer. This increases the cost of production
but improves the chemical resistance.
The standard corrosion-grade isophthalic polyesters are made with a1 :1
molarratio of maleic anhydrideo rfumaric acid with propylene glycol.
