CSI (City Sustainability Index) Model
Visualized models of the City Sustainability Index (CSI) for 18 megacities were developed for
general people to understand sustainability issues in megacities. A model shows the sustainability
conditions of one megacity. Sustainability of megacities considers impacts of human activities in
megacities on the global environment. We can understand the current conditions of megacities,
based on the models. The CSI model consists of four parts. Part ① shows whether the megacity
satisfies constraint conditions in terms of environmental limits and economic equity. If it does not
satisfy a condition, one globe becomes red. Part ② shows the distribution of population density in
the megacity. Parts ③ and ④ measure the level of quality of economic and social dimensions in the
megacity. The higher, the better. See Chapter 9 for details.
