Delayed Building Schedule Control Using Milestones

investment outweigh the losses resulting from such a reorganization of the delayed
schedule.
In turn, the introduction of more registration stages, or even ongoing monitoring
of the progress of works at the construction site, allows for faster diagnosis of time
variances and earlier use of tools to improve the plan, which would result in, for
sure, indicators close to unity—both in terms of schedule and costs—regarding the
profitability of works carried out.
The element to pay attention to is the reason for variances, because their source
translates into the level of indicators of the EVM method, which is the most known
control tool for the implementation of construction projects [1, 11].
The issue of adjusting schedules to existing restrictions, i.e. limits on employment
and availability of means of production, is related to the problem of aligning their
checking charts [12], which is one of the measures for assessing their quality.
This name is justified because on their basis it can be determined whether the
important features of rational organization of works have been retained when drawing
up construction work schedules, i.e. whether employment and the demand for basic
construction machinery and other means of production will be as evenly shaped as
possible. If these schedules show significant unevenness, they should be adjusted
accordingly [12].
Depending on the existing restrictions in terms of time and means of production,
different models of so called decision tables can be formulated. The scheme of each
decision table corresponds to a construction works schedule, realistic to be carried
out under specific conditions of the construction site.
Figure 1 presents four variants of the employment schedule. Comparison of the
presented versions shows that, the dislocation of production means changes the time
reserves of activities [12]. Therefore, it is important to adopt an objective indicator
characterizing the degree of alignment of the checking charts.
The dislocation (movement) of means of production between implemented works
may relate to the need to comply with the directive deadline for the completion of
works covered by the schedule (limitation of time limit), or the inability to increase
employment on ongoing processes (limitation of work limit), with the permissible
extension of the project completion.
2 Engineering Application
2.1 Description of the Schedule Examined
The schedule of the construction project (erection of the raw steel and reinforced
concrete production hall), was used to carry out the production control test with the
use of milestones.
