suggested the alignment of science and policy-making to alleviate the existing obstacles and to enable sustainable and efficient resource management [56]. Providing a
more concrete example representing a real-life illustration of the EWF nexus systems
and their associated interactions, Alzaabi et al. covered the case of a smart city as a
sustainable exemplar and a nest for the EWF nexus. The study has focused mainly
on the role of ICT in bridging the gap between stakeholders involved in the management of the diverse sectors and organisations. Improving governance and enhancing
technologies were recommended to improve the overall performance of the smart
city in addition to overall EWF nexus governance [57].
Integrated analyses of the EWF nexus are necessary to achieve sustainable development and efficient resource management, which is fundamental to the fulfilment
of the food security pillars [58]. Including all the subsystems, stakeholders and interlinkages is necessary to oversee the performance of the entire nexus and mitigate
potential risks that might arise internally or externally. However, the major challenge
in holistic nexus studies resides in the complexities that arise with the expansion of
the system boundary. In fact, considering the three systems in one analysis implies
diverse modelling challenges and mathematical complexities owing to the multiple
stakeholders involved, the different objectives for which they aspire, in addition to the
risks and uncertainties governing systems. Adopting the appropriate modelling tools
and enhancing the decision-making within the EWF nexus represents a promising
solution to alleviate such challenges. The nexus literature is rich with reviews that
have compiled modelling and analytical tools to resolve modern resources management issues from different perspectives and disciplines based on social, economic
and environmental dimensions [33, 37, 38, 59]. In the following section, the review
suggested is an addition to previous literatures in the field of the EWF nexus. It alludes
to the significant number of studies that have addressed the issue of food security
using decision-making tools. The focus will be on solving the multiple uncertainties
and risk challenges faced by food systems with the aim of a developing a resilient
food system that supports security in the system.
4 EWF Nexus Modelling for Efficient Decision-Making
and Resilient Food Security
The EWF nexus along with the synergistic approach that it promotes amongst the
different resources systems and subsystems have been proven to be beneficial in
reducing food insecurity [60]. The nexus approach enables the understanding of
the multifaceted interlinkages supporting the resources systems. In addition, the
collaborative systems approach that drives nexus frameworks drive the shift in policymaking and legislation from the conventional narrow lens, towards a more integrated
reasoning harnessing all sectors for optimal nexus performance.
The literature has demonstrated the benefits of EWF nexus modelling tools in
improving the efficiency of food sectors through the mutual maximisation of benefits
