The installed supervisory system is responsible for controlling the biogas production data of each property, analyzing, among other data, the quality and quantity of gas
injected in the pipeline that reaches the MCT. Thus, from the data of all producers,
it is possible to establish the proportion to which each producer is entitled with
the generation of electric energy. For this calculation, the Biogas Project provided
for a business model elaboration, which contains economic–financial support for
producers to be able to manage the system after the completion of the R&D project
conducted by Eletrosul. Owners will also need to forecast the costs of operating and
maintaining the system, since it is a structure that combines: several biodigesters;
gas pipeline; thermoelectric plant; substation and other components; and systems
that require daily supervision and specialized labor. In addition to the Biogas Project
facilities, some producers of the association already use complementary systems of
solar collectors (on their own initiative) for washing breeding environments. Such is
given since the city of Itapiranga has high thermal amplitude and water temperature
is usually too low for direct contact with pigs.
9 Miniature Thermoelectric Power Plant (MCT)
MCT is responsible for converting biogas into electrical energy. In order to do this, the
project has 4 (four) generator sets (totaling 480 kVA), sized for voltage levels of 380
and 220 V, and operating frequency of 60 Hz. The initially proposed generation offer
suggested an operation of 8 (eight) hours a day, between 2 and 10 p.m., covering peak
hours (the day interval between 5 and 10 p.m.). In this time interval, the Brazilian
system meets the highest energy demand, for which consumers pay an additional
value. In the same manner, energy production in the period is also remunerated in a
different way (Fig. 2).
The choice of using 4 (four) generator groups was made by the team responsible for
the generation research line, as well as to the supervisory system, which identified that
only plant energy production systems relied on 1 (one) generator group. In addition
to the quantitative, the issue of machine maintenance was considered. This allowed
the construction of a preventive maintenance plan that can interrupt a machine, while
