Acknowledgements I am forever indebted to the wonderful family, teachers, friends, and peers
who set me on the right path in my early years of development and helped to launch and support
me through an extremely exciting and challenging professional career. Personal thanks go to the
faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Geological Sciences at East Carolina University;
particularly all the team members (the co-researchers, technicians, and the many students) who
were absolutely crucial components of everything we made happen. I received great pleasure from
working with and guiding a multitude of graduate students through their arduous years of classes,
research projects, and thesis writing. Memories of all the blood, sweat, and tears shed on the
numerous boats, in the marshes and swamps, and especially those grueling stormy soggy groggys
will be cherished forever.
