for survival.
61 Algeria identifies actions on land and soil as part of adaptation
measures, noting that priority will be given to the protection of the population and
the preservation of natural resources against risk of extreme events.
62
For this reason, Algeria’s adaptation objectives include actions to “fight against
erosion and rehabilitate degraded lands as part of the efforts to combat desertification.”
63 The country further notes that it will mainstream action on climate change
impacts into sectoral strategies, in particular for agriculture, water management,
public health and transport.

5.2 Prioritization and Integration of Soil Governance
by Botswana in Its NDC
In its NDC, Botswana’s national objective is to achieve an overall emissions
reduction of 15% by 2030, taking 2010 as the base year.
65 The NDC specifies that
as a semi-arid country, Botswana is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and
places high priority on adaptation to reducing vulnerability.
66 The NDC identifies
extreme droughts based on low rainfall and soil conditions as most common in
south-western Botswana.
67 In its NDC, Botswana announced it was developing a
National Adaptation Plan that prioritizes Climate Smart Agriculture that includes
techniques such as zero-tillage, multi-cropping to increase mulching which in turn
reduces soil erosion.

5.3 Prioritization and Integration of Soil Governance
by Nigeria in Its NDC
In its NDC,
69 Nigeria identifies soil erosion as a major risk factor that lowers
adaptive capacity. The NDC notes that climate change related heavier than normal
rainfall is expected to worsen soil erosion, which is already at catastrophic levels in
the southern part of the country.
70 It points out recent increase in landslides as
