Respondents from rural communes were asked to indicate the most important
motives behind their tourist and recreational activity (it was possible to choose a
maximum of 3 from 11). Usually three (59% of respondents) or just two motives
were indicated (33%).
The following needs were indicated the most frequently: finding peace, quiet
and rest (92% of indications), physical recreation (42%), learning about nature and
culture (24%), and meeting close ones (23%). The need for rest and quiet was the
most important, regardless of the gender, age, and education of the respondents (80–
100% of indications). The need for physical recreation was more important for men
(46%). while the need for learning about nature and culture was more important for
women (32% and 27%, respectively) (Fig. 4).
The fact that the need for learning about nature and culture increased with the
respondents’ age and was important for slightly more than half of the 60-year-old
