vehicle, and wind energy industries. In terms of wind and solar power, massive
companies and large integrated groups in South Korea are the leading patent
applicants, such as Interbrand, Daehan Housing Corporation, and Daewoo Construction. In terms of technology development and patent applications for new
energy batteries, solar cells, and fuel cells, technology companies in the Korean
communication service industry dominate, such as SK Communications, SK Telecom, KT, and SK Broadband.
19.3.4 Renewable Energy Investment in China, Japan,
and South Korea
In the decade 2010–2019, global investment in new renewable energy capacity will
reach 2.6 trillion USD, and new installed PV capacity will exceed that of any other
power generation technology (Fig. 19.3). In East Asia, solar and wind are the two
main fields of investment for renewable energy.
China has been the largest investor in renewable energy production capacity in
this decade to date. From 2004 to 2018, China committed 865.5 billion USD in
investment, followed by the United States which invested 519.3 billion USD, and
Japan with 202 billion USD (Fig. 19.4).
Note: The Americas (AMER) comprise the totality of the continents of North and
South America. The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) is a global
coalition of environmental nongovernmental organizations with more than 150 members in 40 countries worldwide.
