8.3.2 Changes in Rank of Top 10 Assignee Codes
To highlight relative trends across major high-tech countries, we examine the top
10 assignee codes in the last decade by country. Japan, the United States, France,
China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and South Korea have more patents than
other countries. Thus, companies or institutes from these countries rank in the top
10 assignee codes.
Figures 8.6 and 8.7 report the ranking of the top 10 assignee codes by year.
Figure 8.7 is based on Fig. 8.6, with the addition of arrows that represent national
trends. French companies rank first and second fairly consistently; either Alstom
(ALSM-C) or Air Liquide (AIRL-C) topped the list for 7 in 10 years. Chinese
companies have begun emerging since 2013 and in 2014 ranked first (China Sinopec
SNPC-C), ranging from second to fourth in 2015 (China Huaneng CHHU-N,
Shanghai Longking SHAN-N, and Anhui Huaertai ANHU-N). It appears that
inventors from China will continue to file an increasing number of patents in the
future. The ranks of companies from Japan, the United States, and Germany are
lower than at the beginning of the decade, mainly due to the emergence of Chinese
companies.
