a. Flushing well before sampling
The perched water in the well pipe shall be pumped out to allow the fresh water of
the aquifer to fill in, for the well is required to be washed before the collection of
groundwater samples. The well shall be washed one day before sampling using
Bayer tube. For the area with low background level of sand content, the well will be
deemed to have been properly washed if the groundwater effluent is visually
confirmed to be clear and transparent; and for the area with high background level,
the well washing will be deemed to have been completed, if the error is lower than
10% in the consecutive three measurements of the pH value, temperature and
conductivity of the water of the volume of each well.
b. Monitoring of field indexes
The field monitoring indexes shall be analyzed and tested before the collection of
groundwater samples at each point, including the water level, water temperature,
pH value, conductivity, turbidity, color, smell and taste, visible substances, dissolved oxygen and oxidation reduction potential.
c. Collection of samples
The groundwater samples will be collected after the field indexes have been
measured. A total of 8 groups and 40 groundwater samples were collected from the
5 wells in the hazardous wastes disposal site. Conservatives will be added
depending on the requirements for testing of different indexes. The water container
shall be fastened with caps and sealed immediately after sampling, and be labelled
as proper (e.g. the number of monitoring wells, sampling date and time, monitoring
items, samplers, etc.).
d. Preservation of samples
Collection and preservation of water samples: The water samples for monitoring of
heavy metals shall be filled in 125 mL plastic bottles added with nitric acid as
conserving agent; that for monitoring of VOCs shall be collected in glass bottles
prestoring concentrated hydrochloric acid solvent, fitted with PTFE seals; that for
monitoring of SVOCs, ammonia-nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen, shall be collected in
1L brown glass bottles with PTFE seals; samples for monitoring of other organic
indexes shall be collected in 40 ml scavenging bottles which shall be completely
filled leaving no space; water samples for monitoring permanganate index shall be
collected in 250 mL plastic bottles; that for monitoring of the total number of
Escherichia coli and bacteria shall be collected in 500 mL sterile ground glass
stoppered bottle that shall be sealed with tin paper wrapped around the bottle
mouth. All samples are sealed with PTFE film after the container cap has been
tightened and are stored in a low temperature incubator.
