(4) Groundwater pollution source intensity evaluation
The landfill is an existing source of groundwater pollution with seepage control.
According to the process shown in Fig. 3.3, the groundwater pollution source
intensity evaluation needs to consider source hazard, but not the mitigation performance of the vadose zone, and the results depend on source hazard evaluation.
Based on the findings of landfill investigation, indicator-specific scores are
given: 10 for landfill volume (Y1) which reaches 599,000 m
3 ; 5 for landfill period
(Y2) spans 5 years; 8 for landfill type (Y4) as mainly MSW is landfilled; 6 for
maximum leachate production (Y3) which attains 2.19 Â 10
4 m
3 /a; 1 for seepage
control (Y5); and 1 for leachate treatment (Y6) through collection or treatment
system. Using Eq. (3.1), the hazard index of the landfill is calculated to be 6.3737,
within the Grade II range.
Therefore, the groundwater pollution source intensity is rated Grade II, the same as
pollution source hazard as indicated in Fig. 3.3. The landfill is considered as a regular
site for pollution control, and the focus should be put on the protection from pollution
sources and on the reduction of source intensity, which poses stricter requirements for
seepage control measures and on the time of existence of pollution sources.
