household wells downstream can also be used. Therefore, six groundwater sampling sites, two household well sampling sites, one background sampling site, four
surface water sampling sites, and seven soil sampling sites were set up in this study.
• The background sampling site is located 50–100 m upstream of the landfill;
• The groundwater sampling sites (6) are set according to the deployment of
monitoring wells of the provincial geological monitoring station, numbered
ZK1, ZK2, ZK3, ZK4, ZK5 and ZK6 respectively;
• The household well sampling sites: Groundwater samples are taken in perennially available household wells (MJ8 and MJ9). Three samples are taken in
each well, at the site within 1.0 m from the well water table, about 1/2 of depth
to well water table and 3/4 of the depth to well water table respectively.
• Soil and water samples are taken simultaneously, and a certain amount of
sediment is collected near the ditch for landfill leachate drainage, depending on
the discharge of landfill leachate into surface water and Dongsheng River.
Among the seven soil sampling points, six are near the monitoring wells and one
is located below the ditch for landfill leachate drainage.
(f) Sampling and monitoring indicators and frequency
• Screening principles
As no monitoring has been applied to the given non-standard landfill, the test items
are screened according to the toxicity indicators included in the Quality Standards
for Groundwater (GB/T14848–2017) and the Sanitary Standards for Drinking
Water (GB5749–2006). Test is conducted according to national or industry standard methods for analysis, industry-specific technical specifications for monitoring
or industry unified methods for analysis.
• Monitoring indicators and frequency
– Groundwater sampling and monitoring
The groundwater indicators are selected based on the test items adopted in the
national survey of groundwater environmental status (Table 5.17), while considering the Quality Standards for Groundwater (GB/T14848–2017) and the Sanitary
Standards for Drinking Water (GB5749–2006). (Please refer to the groundwater
monitoring program for landfills).
Taking into account the limited project funding, water quality samples are taken
twice a year, during the dry season and the wet season each, for on-site test of
physicochemical indicators and inorganic and organic components. Water table
monitoring is conducted simultaneously.
– Soil monitoring indicators and sampling
The soil indicators are selected based on test items covered by the national
survey of groundwater environmental status, while considering the Quality
Standards for Soils (GB15618–1995), the Provisional Standards for Soil Quality
