28 Green Power Generations and Environmental Monitoring Systems …

The actuator, shown in Fig. 28.5, can assist human motion. At the same time,
it can work as a motion feedback sensor. Such equipment may be used to evaluate
a recovery situation precisely. The DE was made from an acrylic elastomer with a
carbon black electrode.
Figure 28.6 shows the gauging of the timing and depth of breathing with a PC
using the breathing sensor developed in this study. A study into utilizing this sensor
system for dementia prevention is underway at some Japanese universities. Additional applications to sports training, mental training and medical treatment are also
possible.
More recently, the use of DEs in the reverse mode, in which the deformation of
the elastomer by external mechanical work is used to generate electrical energy, has
been gaining more attention. Since power generators using DEs do not depend on
the frequency, motion and vibration of the low frequency band, which is difficult to
utilize for electric power production, they can be easily adapted and their demand is
growing considerably (Lin et al. 2009; Chiba 2019; Kovacs 2018; Koh et al. 2009;
Huang and Shian 2013; Brouchu et al. 2010; Vertechy et al. 2015; Bortot and Gei
2015; Moretti et al. 2015; Yuan 2009; McKay et al. 2011; Anderson et al. 2012; Van
Kessel et al. 2015; Moretti et al. 2019; Arena 2018; Chiba et al. 2013, 2008, 2017a,
b, c; Chiba et al. 2007b, 2008; Waki and Chiba 2017).
28.3 Promotion of Local Generation of Dc Electric Power
and Its Networking and Coupling with de Generation
in the Ocean
In this section, we would like to consider two issues: (1) collaboration between locally
produced DE power generation systems and large DE power generation systems
in the ocean and (2) efficient consumption of that energy within smart cities with
well-arranged smart grids.
28.3.1 Local Generation for Local Consumption Using dE
Power Generation
As mentioned above, DC electricity is produced by local DE generators and then is
consumed in nearby factories, offices, homes, etc. Surplus electric power is used to
produce hydrogen, which is stored and then transported to areas where electric power
is needed, and is converted back to DC electricity through fuel cells. An ultra-large
DE power plant could also be built in the ocean, and could convert electricity to
hydrogen, which could then be carried by tanker and distributed to various places
through a hydrogen transport chain on the ground.
