Chapter 25
Model-Based Design of Product-Related
Information Management System
for Accelerating Resource Circulation
Hitoshi Komoto, Mitsutaka Matsumoto, and Shinsuke Kondoh
Abstract In the manufacturing industry, information about products accumulated
through the whole life cycle such as design descriptions, usage data, and failure
event history is considered crucial to innovate the industry’s value propositions.
Although such information can be used to increase the efficiency of the operations
and decision makings in the end-of-life stage, such information is not effectively
shared and used by the potential stakeholders involved in the life cycle of products. In
order to analyze the value of information sharing among the stakeholders and design
a system to realize desired information sharing, this study proposes a simulationbased approach to specify the external and internal requirements of such a system
and evaluate the impact of the system on resource circulation and profitability of the
stakeholders.

25.1 Introduction
In the manufacturing industry, information about products accumulated through the
whole life cycle is considered crucial to innovate the industry’s value propositions.
For instance, the usage data of machine tools (incl. alarm and failure event history)
are currently used for scheduling of maintenance actions and spare parts delivery.
Moreover, they have enabled provision of statistical analysis of machine tool usage
and recommendations regarding better tool usage (Plattform Industrie 2018; Robot
Revolution Initiative 2018).
Product-related information such as design descriptions and usage data can be also
used to increase the efficiency of the operations and decision makings in the end-oflife stage. For instance, design information is crucial in improving the efficiency in
the end-of-life processes of electric vehicles (Li et al. 2018). Material composition
