CLTE maturity assessment
Based on the CLTE, Martinsen (Martinsen 2018) developed a maturity assessment
tool used to evaluate and plan improvements in TE management. The tool consists
of two parts; first part is assessing how well the company is performing in the twelve
information flow relation loops visualised in Fig. 21.1. Grades are from (1) not
applied, (2) poor, (3) medium, (4) good and (5) excellent to the following questions
(see (Martinsen 2018) for more details);
How well are;
1a FR transformed to TE, by whom, and which tools?
1b decision basis from TE feedback to aid FR description in following projects?
2a TE fitted to the PC? – and tolerance stack-up (Bjørke 1989) critical tolerances
and reference surfaces?
2b PC data used in TE for new products?
3a PC influence on PP described?/Variation in PP understood?
3b Can it be traced back PC?
4a FR used in manufacturing? critical parameters known?
4b PC feedback (and make an influence) on FR?
5a Relations between TE and the PP variations understood?
5bVariations in PP on existing products feedback to and used on TE on new
products?
6a The PP according to the FR? Did we get what we wanted?
6b PP in existing products feedback to aid definition of functional requirements
in following projects?
Second part of the maturity assessment is the information and data exchange
assessment dividing the maturity into 5 stages (Martinsen 2018) described by the
following:
Stage 1: No organised information exchanges for TE.
Stage 2: TE based on expert’s subjective opinions. Cross-functional teams using
semi-quantitative tools (FMEA).
Stage 3: Real data on ad hoc and manual data processing for TE. Some use of
computer-aided TE decision support.
Stage 4: Systemized regular data and information exchange, analysis and computeraided TE decision support.
Stage 5: Instant and autonomous data exchange. Automatic translation of data and
information to adapt to the specific user, project team and TE challenge.
21.3 Industry Case Study
The case study was made at the Kongsberg Automotive (KA) plant at Raufoss,
Norway. KA is a Tier 1 supplier to automotive industry designing and delivering
connectors for pressurized air brake systems. The company owns several product
