20.3.3 Information Management Using RFID
RFID is a generic name for authentication technology that uses radio waves (Borriello
2005). It is widely and effectively used in our daily life such as in tags for inventory
control of goods and passenger cards for public transportation.
In our part agent system, the information of an individual part is managed by
associating the part agent with the actual part using RFID. This is acquired through
the agent corresponding to the part when the information of a specific part is required.
Since a part agent exists in the network and the corresponding part exists in the
real world, a part agent in a network and a part with an IC tag attached in the real
world are associated with each other by using RFID and are moved synchronously.
In the part agent system, at the stage of manufacturing a part that is a starting point
of a product life cycle, an IC tag is attached to the manufactured part, and a specified
ID is recorded in the tag. At the same time, an agent having the same ID information
is generated. The agent identifies the location of the part by recognizing the ID of the
IC tag of the part even if the part moves to other stages, and synchronously moves
to the place where the part resides.
20.3.4 JADE
We use the network agent platform JADE (Java Agent Development Framework).

JADE is an open-source agent platform written in Java. A schematic diagram of
JADE is shown in Fig. 20.4.
