Fig. 9.2 Two problem solving paths in ARIZ-85C (Fey)
The emerging technologies database serves as a reference to make designers
understand the emerging technologies with the help of traits of emerging technologies. The traits of emerging technologies include their concept, feature, function and
application.
To make the connection between ARIZ-85C (Fey) and the database, this study
makes two classifications for each technology in the database. The operation of the
first classification is to add Substance term and Field term on the original database
according to traits of each technology. With the first classification, the emerging
technologies and Su-Field table is found. Emerging technologies and Su-Field table
can guide designers to select suitable technology to solve their engineering problem
in accordance with Su-Field model and standard solutions during part 2 in ARIZ-85C
(Fey).
The operation of second classification is to make the category of applied field
for each emerging technology. The emerging technologies and applied field table
is established by second classification. Designers need to determine the field of the
engineering problem they face, and then select the corresponding technologies as
the resources from the emerging technologies and applied field table during part 3
in ARIZ-85C (Fey). These two tables are the link between ARIZ-85C (Fey) and
emerging technologies and play an important role in the design process this study
presented.
9.4 ECO-innovation Method
9.4.1 Part 1: Formulation of System Conflicts
Designers are able to deal with engineering problem through the innovative ecodesign process presented in Fig. 9.3. The innovative eco-design process is based
on ARIZ-85C (Fey), emerging technologies database, emerging technologies and
Su-Field table, emerging technologies with applied field table, and green assessment.
