Chapter 9
Eco-innovation by Integrating Emerging
Technologies with ARIZ Method
Jahau Lewis Chen and Chi-Yu Chou
Abstract This paper integrates emerging technologies with ARIZ method and
presents a process of eco-innovative design. The process is based on emerging technology database and ARIZ-85C (Fey) innovation algorithm. With the connection
between the database and ARIZ-85C (Fey), designers can analyze problems step
by step and take advantage of the traits of suitable emerging technologies to solve
problem and create innovative design. Furthermore, this process adds the concept of
functional assessment and eco-assessment to confirm that designers develop an innovative design that not only can effectively solve the problem, but also more friendly
to the environment.

9.1 Introduction
New emerging and fast growing technologies, such as IoT, 3D printing, self-driving
cars, intelligent robots/machines, has attracted lots of attention recently. Those technologies for the future will play a key role in helping businesses design much more
sustainable products and move towards sustainability in the future. However, the
influence of emerging technologies to the environmental impacts is not clearly realized by inventors and designers. It is therefore necessary to develop eco-innovation
method to help designers integrating emerging technologies into their product
innovation activities to innovate new product with sustainability concepts.
The definition of emerging technologies has been very vague. Halaweh (2013)
points out that emerging technology is not necessary new technology. If any technology is not spread into all technology domains or does not produce great change
in business and industry model, then it can be treat as emerging technologies. Rotolo
et al. (2015) defined emerging technologies by five attributes: (1) radical novelty, (2)
fast growth, (3) coherence, (4) prominent impact, and (5) uncertainty and ambiguity.
