4 Background Information of Respondents in Study Region
An empirical analysis was performed to present the demographic overview of the
respondents, as well as to find out the awareness level of locals towards rural tourism
and the role of rural tourism in sustainable development in the area.
The majority of respondents were male (68.0%) as compared to their female
(32.0%) counterparts. This result can be explained by the culture of the study area;
males were encouraged to participate in the survey, but not females. The majority of
respondents were in the younger range of 45 years of age or less (60.8%). The senior
age group respondents formulated almost two-fifths of the respondents (39.2%).
The reason was that, when the researchers administered the survey to the sampled
households, the young family members who were literate in the family carried out
the questionnaire. The majority of respondents (61.5%) were involved in tourism
related business activities from 5–10 years, more than a quarter of the respondents
(27.5%) were involved in tourism business for less than 5 years and the remaining
(11%) for more than 10 years. It indicates that respondents are sufficiently indulged
in tourism-related business activities. More than half of the respondents (57.5%) indicated an education of bachelor’s degree or higher as compared to those (42.5%) who
have a literacy level below graduation. More than 60% of the respondents (68.75%)
were directly indulged in the tourism business, such accommodation, transportation, restaurant, catering, guiding, etc., whereas the rest of the respondents (31.25%)
were engaged in indirect business activities, such as shopkeepers, vendors, crafts and
textile vendors and so on. As far as concerned the annual income level of the respondents, more than two-fifths of the respondents (42.5%) indicated an income level
below 5 lakhs INR, almost thirty percent (29.3%) with 5–10 lakhs INR, followed by
the remaining respondents (28.2%) with more than 10 lakhs INR per annum.
