Rural Community Prosperity Versus
Tourism Progress: An Example
of Sustainable Opportunities

1 Introduction
Sustainable tourism has become one of the key elements of rural development across
the globe. With respect to rural leisure activities, community-based tourism represents a relevant part of sustainable rural economies and has been used to initiate
local development. Local residents play a significant role in the progression of
community-based tourism. Successful tourism balances interactions between residents and local tourism retail and service providers (Zhang et al. 2006). Local
community involvement and support is necessary for sustainable tourism development (Gursoy et al. 2010). According to Carmichael (2006), resident receptiveness
and friendliness toward visitors directly affects positive experiences, which influence
the likelihood of return visits to the destination and word-of-mouth recommendations. There are a variety of national, regional, and local planning activities that foster
active involvement of local community residents.
The global precedence for community-based tourism is due to concern about
the quality of development with respect to social, economic, and environmental
impacts, particularly in depressed rural regions (Blaine et al. 1993; Sznajder et al.
2009; Petrovi´ c et al. 2017a, b). Sensitivity to the rural condition is increasingly
