in the rural communes of the Pozna´ n Metropolis, is very consistent with the essence
of sustainable development. The need for rest and peace was indicated by 8–9 per
10 respondents, regardless of their gender, age, or education. The next important
motive behind the tourist and recreational activity of the respondents was the need
for physical recreation (indicated by almost every second respondent).
The hypothesis that the preferences and needs that condition tourist and recreational activity of the inhabitants of rural communes do not differ significantly from
the preferences and needs of the inhabitants of all other areas of the Pozna´ n Metropolis
was not entirely confirmed, as some significant differences were found. Obtained
results allow one to conclude that inhabitants of rural communes feel relatively less
need for physical activity than inhabitants of urban–rural (by 7 percentage points) or
urban communes (by 11 percentage points). The need for learning about nature and
culture was also less significant in rural communes than in urban–rural communes
(by 4 points) and urban communes (by 7 points). On the other hand, the need for
visiting friends and relatives and participation in events turned out to be a stronger
stimulus to induce tourist and recreational activity of inhabitants of rural communes
than for other inhabitants of the Metropolis. Only the need for peace and rest was
the most important for everyone (about 90% of indications).
Also, the assumption that villagers of the Pozna´ n Metropolis recreate mainly in
the areas located near their homes was not completely confirmed. Despite the high
attractiveness of tourist and recreational areas located near their home locations,
such as Puszcza Zielonka and Wielkopolski National Park, the inhabitants of rural
communes did not indicate them as the most frequently visited during free time.
This is particularly significant in considering sustainable development, as the rural
communes border on the city of Pozna´ n. The main areas of tourist and recreational
activity of inhabitants of rural communes were in the river valleys of Główna and
Cybina, Warta, and Samica and Bogdanka, with only the two last ones being located
near their home location.
Further research on tourist and recreational activity of inhabitants of rural
communes, especially concerning economic conditions, will enable the identification of changes of this process and successful exploitation of the Pozna´ n Metropolis
potential.

“Metropolitan region as a space of recreational penetration on the example of the Pozna´ n
agglomeration”, conducted by the Pozna´ n School of Banking in 2015–2016.
