• Inappropriate cement content, e.g. too high cement content in massive structures, leading to excessive heat of hydration and subsequent
early age thermal cracking (see Chapter 4)
• Inappropriate workability of the concrete, leading to casting problems
• Inappropriate paste design, e.g. leading to excessive shrinkage or to
segregation issues
• Inappropriate alkali content of the mix, possibly leading to detrimental processes (ASR, see Chapter 5)
• Incompatibility of different admixtures
A good mix design is important in order to successfully build in concrete.
Due attention should be given to the mix design, including some experiments to verify the properties of the obtained material (initial type testing).
