Abstract
A three-part experiment was conducted at the French National School of Maritime Affairs
and Coastal Planning to assess the feasibility of using black soldier fly (BSF) meal in the diet
of freshwater fish. The first part focused on fly rearing and optimizing techniques for
producing high-quality BSF meal. The second part involved developing fish feeds based on
BSF meal, supplemented with various animal and plant by-products. Finally, the third part
tested these feeds on freshwater fish with initial weights of 2.5 ± 0.5 g for tilapia and 4.6 ±
0.48 g for koi carp. The results showed that fish fed the BSF meal-based feed did not exhibit
any significant difference in growth compared to those fed a traditional feed (p > 0.05) and
final weights of 11.25 ± 2.16 g for tilapia and 8.8 ± 0.97 g for koi carp. These encouraging
results suggest that BSF meal could be a sustainable and nutritious alternative to conventional
animal protein sources in aquaculture.
