phenomena, advanced eutrophication, deterioration of oxygen conditions, prevalence
of high salinity and a number of other consequences as well.
Such large spectrum of quantitative-qualitative changes in reservoirs of lentic
waters at their large numerical force identified with the multiplicity of scenarios of
their functioning and use, creates the possibility to predict the course of degradation processes of limnic waters quality in the objects, which contemporarily function under incomparably smaller environment transformation and to undertake the
protection and recultivation activities.
4.8 Recommendations
Knowledge of the issues related to the functioning of water bodies in Poland (e.g. their
occurrence and number, morphological and hydrological origins, limnic processes
and socio-economic importance) is indispensable at various stages of education
(e.g. in the field of earth and environmental sciences) as well as can be leveraged
for economic purposes where the measures undertaken are informed by scientific
evidence. This is because artificial reservoirs are an integral part of Poland’s water
resources and their quantitative and qualitative condition affects spatial management
within the region in which they are present. Therefore, thorough quantitative and
qualitative identification of limnic processes and the socio-economic importance of
inland water bodies provides the basis for:
– the assessment of the role of water bodies in the structure and functioning of the
overall landscape;
– optimising the use of water bodies and managing the areas in their vicinity
(in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, environmental
protection and landscape architecture);
– the reclamation, revitalisation and protection of water bodies and the proper use
of their catchment areas;
– the liquidation of water bodies by draining and backfilling them with soil and the
subsequent land reclamation and development efforts;
– the construction of new reservoirs.
