recirculating aquaculture systems for breeding and farming e.g. sturgeon or African
sharptooth catfish.
The largest complex of fish ponds in Europe with an area of about 8,000 hectares
is the Milicz Ponds in the Barycz River valley. There are also many such ponds in the
Mała Wisła River valley (from the vicinity of Skoczów to the vicinity of O´ swi˛ ecim).

Another use of lentic waters involves the production of electricity in a technological
process (i.e. as a renewable energy source). Water from the reservoirs is used to
drive electric generators at pumped storage power plants situated next to them (at

8 MW). More efficient use of flowing water as an energy resource can be made
where a group of several neighbouring water reservoirs is used, such as in the case
of the Soła River cascade with three hydropower plants, including two flow-through
hydropower plants (in the ˙
Zywiec Reservoir dam and the Por˛ abka Reservoir dam)
