Preface
Dawid Szatten, Zygmunt Babi´ nski and Grzegorz Nadolny from Department of Inland
Waterways Revitalization, Institute of Geography, Kazimierz Wielki University in
Bydgoszcz. This chapter describes the type of data, modeling and analysis tools that
are required to qualitatively and quantitatively describe sludge dynamics. A brief
overview of the types of sediments transported by the Vistula and Oder rivers as well
as their tributaries and anthropogenic impact on sediment transport were presented.
Chapter 13 entitled “Environmental and Anthropogenic Determinants of
Water Chemistry in the Carpathians” was written by Joanna P. Siwek from Department of Hydrology, Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, Jagiellonian
University in Kraków. The chapter discusses the quality of water in streams and
groundwater in small Carpathian groundwater catchments. The impact of the main
factors determining the diversity of water chemistry in streams and groundwater is
presented, among others geological structure, surface runoff from rainfall and snow
melting. The impact of tourist traffic and related infrastructure on water quality was
determined in order to effectively protect against degradation.
Chapter 14 “Surface Water Eutrophication in Poland: Assessment and
Prevention” was written by Elena Neverova-Dziopak from Department of Environmental Management and Protection, Faculty of Surveying and Environmental
Engineering, AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. The paper
presents the essence of the eutrophication process, analysis of methodological problems of trophic state assessment and assessment methodology based on simple and
inexpensive indicators ensuring continuous monitoring and control of eutrophication. The development of eutrophication of surface waters in Poland as well as the
principles of its prevention and management were also presented.
The last chapter in this part of the volume entitled “Monitoring of Small Catchments in Poland Under the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Programme:
The Functioning of the Struga Toru ´
nska River Agricultural Catchment” was
written by a team of authors Marek Kejna, Ireneusz Sobota, Joanna UsckaKowalkowska from Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, Nicolaus
University in Toru´ n and by Henryk Wojtczak from Voivodship Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Bydgoszcz. The chapter presents the results of research
conducted as part of the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Program within the
Struga Toru´ nska drainage basin, located in central Poland. The catchment area
is an example of a small agricultural catchment area that operates under strong
anthropopressure, mainly under the influence of agriculture.
Part IV of the book is entitled “Water and Wastewater in Urban Areas” and
consists of three chapters.
Chapter 16 “The State of Water and Sewage Management in Poland” was
written by Katarzyna Kubiak-Wójcicka and Monika Kielik from Faculty of Earth
Sciences and Spatial Management, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toru´ n. This
chapter discusses issues related to water and sewage infrastructure in Poland. The
time and spatial differentiation of the density of the water supply, sewage and
sewage treatment plants are presented in detail. The study includes issues related
to the possibilities of financing activities leading to the improvement of wastewater
treatment.
