12.4.3 Bead Load Transport—Volumetric Analysis
An even more accurate method of bed load transport assessment is a volumetric analysis of bathymetric maps. The date for the analysis was collected from 38 measurements on bed-elevation on the Vistula in Toru´ n (Fig. 12.5) within the period 2011–
2019, within the section directly surrounded by the newly commissioned bridge.
The measurements were collected from a motorboat equipped with a GPS rover for
tracking the boat position and a single beam echosounder. Data was collected once
by covering the water surface with dots every 5 m along a river section of 1900 m
long, i.e. between 730.40 and 732.30 river kilometre. A digital sonar data record:
x and y coordinates during a local PUWG-92 coordinate system and z depth were
used to prepare a digital depths map for every single measurement within the sort
of a TIN model, and then a DEM raster model—in reference to the average water
level. Volumetric analysis was administrated on the example of an analysis of seven
measurements carried out on July 2013 and July 2017 (Fig. 12.8). Volumetric analysis is a quantitative approach which involves measurement of the volume of specific
factors.
The obtained result indicates the cyclicity of the appearance of bed forms in the
studied section. The analyzes carried out showed that the full transition cycle of the
river bar (sandy mesoform) in the researched section of the river is about 4 years.
The volumetric analysis made it possible to calculate the total sediment transport of
the bed load of Vistula River in this section of the river. In the period from June 2013
to June 2017, 2.35 million tons of sand and gravel sediments migrated here (annual
transport of 0.585 million tons, which is about 330,000 m
3 ). It should be emphasized
that the analyzed period was characterized by low flows (average for 4 years—853
m
3 ·s
−1 ). Hence the transport volume is relatively low.
12.5 Sediment Management Concept
Considering constant hydromorphological changes in river channels and water reservoirs caused by anthropogenic and natural influences, adaptation and optimization of
sediment management strategies is an endless task. Therefore, in line with the WFD
recommendations, measures are taken to manage the sediment on an ongoing basis.
Sediment management in Poland is part of the tasks defined by River Basin Management Plans (RBMP) in river basin areas [95], which provide an overview of important water management problems. According to art. 315 of the Water Law Act [96]
RBMP in the basin district is one of the main planning documents for programming
and coordinating activities aimed at achieving or maintaining a good state Surface
Water Bodies (SWB), sustainable use of water resources and improvement of flood
protection and counteracting the effects of drought. Each RBMP includes, among
others general description of the characteristics of the river basin district, summary
of the identification of significant anthropogenic impacts and assessment of their
