which enabled the groundwater to reach the quality class II. The groundwater quality
deteriorated again in 2017, particularly due to the repeated increase in the number
of sulphate and sodium ions (Table 11.6).
11.5.2 The Neogene Aquifer
The groundwater of the Neogene aquifer is represented by observation wells from
the ´
Swi˛ etokrzyskie (II/737/1) and Lesser Poland (II/1716/1) voivodeships. These
wells have been selected in order to analyse the content of nitrates on account
of their increased concentrations in 2017 (Fig. 11.10). In the observation well
number II/737/1, the concentration of nitrates slightly decreased since 2013 from
28,15 mg/dm
3 —in 2013 to 26,75 mg/dm
3 in 2017. All the remaining main ions of
the groundwater coming from this well reveal a stable range of concentrations.
It can be concluded then that the increased contents of nitrates has an anthropogenic background and probably constitutes a local exceedance. In the observation well from Lesser Poland, the nitrate concentration considerably decreased from
