10.2 Outline of the Geological Structure of the Coast
The Southern Baltic coast is situated within the range of several geological units
(Fig. 10.3). The Cretaceous deposits in the Cainozoic substratum are developed
mostly as marls, siltstone, and claystone, as well as sands and sandstone, and they
are present mainly in the eastern part of the area. However, in the western part of the
study area, Jurassic rocks dominate in the Cainozoic substratum, including mostly
limestone, marl, claystone, and sandstone. The depth of the Mesozoic roof in the
analysed section of the coast varies (Fig. 10.3): in the western part the Cainozoic
substratum is located at the altitude of ca. −50 m amsl and is descending in the
