8.2.3 Paprocany Lake
The lake Paprocany is located in the City of Tychy, in southern Poland. Constructed
in the first half of the eighteenth century, it is one of the oldest dammed reservoirs in
Poland [29]. Currently, the lake is used for recreational purposes and fish farming.
The lake covers the area of 105.1 ha, and its mean and maximum depths are 1.34
and 2.51 m, respectively. The natural catchment area is 130.6 km
2 . However most of
the surface water is transferred currently downstream the lake limiting the catchment
area to 17.94 km
2 and increasing considerably the water residence time. Despite the
efforts made to improve the water quality, the use of the lake for recreational purposes
was limited. Therefore, the “Programme of the restoration of the Lake Paprocany”
was commissioned by the Municipal Office in Tychy and the model of the lake was
prepared to support analyses of proposed measures [30]. Main objectives of the model
application included the assessment of dynamics in the water quality, the assessment
of impacts of the restoration of the natural catchment area and the evaluation of the
performance of the solid barrier partially isolating the bathing area. The horizontal
resolution of the model prepared using the coupled ELCOM-CAEDYM was 10 ×
10 m, while the vertical resolution ranged from 0.1 m near the surface to 1.3 m in
the deepest part.
In order to assess the impact of the restoration of the catchment area, two scenarios
were analysed. The first one assumed that the lake, in addition to current inflows,
will receive water from the Gostynia River basin upstream the S1 ditch but only
