Chapter 16
One Final Word
This chapter includes some important notes on what the reader should be able to
perform using this book.
Based on the steps discussed through this text and the references cited a reader
should now be capable of starting a sustainable risk assessment for an operation or
project and maintain it as long as needed. The goal has also been to enable the reader
to:
• make recommendations to the board regarding the approval of corporate policies
and standards for the management of material risks;
• oversee the policies and management processes used to manage the material sustainability risks of the corporation;
• review and assess assurance reports to verify that corporate policies and standards
have, in fact, been implemented;
• review and assess management’s risk management strategies for new projects and
report to the board as to their adequacy;
• assess the application of adequate corporate resources;
• review and assess verification reports pertaining to the management of material
risks.
If the reader is requested to develop a Tailings Operating Manual, leading practice
would require:
• the identification through a Chap. 14-compliant methodology of risks with the
highest level of attention being given to the development of appropriate critical
control measures and procedures;
• the involvement, including final sign-off, of the engineer of record and other experts
in the identification and preparation of critical control measures and procedures.
The Tailings Operating Manual should clearly identify the tolerable and manageable versus unmanageable risks and ensure that the greatest attention is paid to the
development and documentation of critical control measures.
