4. Using aluminum foil, design a light reflector for the photovoltaic cell to
focus the light shining on it. Use the attached reflector to measure the new
current and make a recording.
Discussion Questions from the Experiment
1. Which colors led to the generation of the highest quantity of electricity?
2. Explain what is observed when you shade the cell.
3. What happens to the current when: a. Photovoltaic cells are shaded and
connected in series; b. Photovoltaic cells are connected and shaded in
parallel?
4. What takes place when you heat the photovoltaic cell?
5. In what way does temperature influence a photovoltaic cell’s temperature?
6. More light leads to the production of more current. Evaluate the trueness
of this statement.
3.5 Science and Technology
Currently, there has been an increased dependence on technology to solve environmental issues globally. This has been brought about by the realization that
many governments, especially in Africa, are unwilling to make necessary sociopolitical changes that minimize consumption and growth in production. Many
renewable energy sources are currently being exploited because of technological
advances that are cognizant of environmental changes. Technology relies on society
to shape Green growth initiatives. Science and technology have mainly been crucial
in ensuring that many development forms are sustainable (Kates 2010). As such,
many programs incorporate sustainable development policies that seek to alter the
economic growth nature instead of limiting it. These are based on the perception
that continued growth in a world with finite resources can be spearheaded by
technological powers, which can enable humans to find better sources or offer
alternatives in case-specific resources begin to dwindle. In other words, technology
plays a vital role in helping us use and reuse what is left efficiently. Sustainable
development tools and technologies aim to bring about changes, including the
minimization of wastes, material substitution, recycling, pollution control, efficient
resource use, and changed processes in production.
How does biotechnology enhance sustainability? Discuss three African
projects that make use of the concept of biotechnology.
Furthermore, science and technology play a crucial role in promoting the
3Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle, which are essential components for a sustainable
