leadership of Professor Sachs, the institute significantly contributes to the necessary
knowledge for tackling the challenges of the twenty-first century. With curricula for
24 degrees and an active fellowship program, it is also educating new leaders to
ensure that they become professionals in sustainable development. Such institutions
and leaders need to devise innovative strategies for protecting the future of our
vulnerable planet.
13.9 Role of Religious Groups
Religion plays a crucial role in conservatism, environmental stewardship, and
responsible behavior. These are crucial for the adoption of sustainable activities.
The three major functions of religion are campaign and intermediation, enhancing
responsible behavior, and the dissemination of worldviews and values that empower
environmental action and attitudes. Many religious groups are disturbed by the
increasing trends of climate change (Minton et al. 2015). They express the desire
to reform and adopt environmentally friendly practices. Also, they advocate for
more sustainable behaviors and the development of pro-environmental policies that
include the use of cleaner energy (see Table 13.3). Many Western Christians have
demonstrated that they are committed to enhancing sustainability by engaging in
ethical and responsible behaviors.
What has been the main challenge that deters Christians from environmental
conservation?
Various initiatives that focus on engaging the local congregation are evident.
For example, the Shrinking the Footprint campaign conducted by the Church of
England aims to minimize CO 2 emissions. Similarly, Islam has theological and
ethical underpinnings with harmony values, stewardship, and environmentalism.
Muslim communities also tend to associate themselves with better environmentalism. According to the Quran, the natural order was put in place by Allah. It
further provides insight that humans were granted the responsibility to become
the custodians of the Earth. This is also evident in the Bible, thus suggesting
that religion is a crucial way of enhancing sustainability. Some of the Islamic
projects that promote sustainability through environmentalism are Muslim Khatri
Association and the Muslim Green Guide to Reducing Climate Change (Hope and
Jones 2014). The guide offers advice on the way humans can live sustainably. With
this in mind, religion could play an indispensable role in promoting sustainability.
How can Muslims take advantage of their teachings to enhance sustainable
development?
