13 The Future: Achieving Sustainability
Identify some real-world examples of Africa’s fragile ecosystems.
Cities globally are responding to urbanism through the promotion of sustainable
development solutions via innovative approaches for the reduction of congestion and
pollution. The challenges are numerous, but these also present great opportunities
for transforming the world with innovative thinking and efficient technology. Today,
the world is at a crucial and defining moment where the interdependency of
people, society, and the environment are essential for survival. There is a need
for innovation, communication, respect, as well as cultural diversity to make sure
that we achieve sustainability in many areas. However, achieving sustainability will
continue to be difficult if it is left for only certain stakeholders. There is a need to
acknowledge the roles of various stakeholders and institutions in the future viability
of sustainability. In other words, a sustainable future can only be achieved through
an iterative, holistic, and integral process. It is within this pretext that this chapter
seeks to examine the roles of various stakeholders, organisms, and institutions in
achieving sustainability. We will explore the roles that microorganisms, plants, and
animals play in the sustainability of the ecosystem. Citizens, governments, and
businesses will form the foundation for the role of various stakeholders. Religious
groups and educational institutions will act as organizations that play a crucial role
in achieving sustainability.
13.2 Role of Microorganisms
Microorganisms play a crucial role on our planet. Many of the tasks performed are
geared towards making the planet habitable and sustainable (see Fig. 13.1). To limit
the focus of this subsection, the 17 SDGs will be used to show the crucial way
microorganisms assist in achieving sustainability. The first role is the generation of
income. Microorganisms are crucial for the production of Gobar Gas and traditional
food in Nigeria, including Iru, Ogi, and vinegar, that are crucial for generating
income as well as providing food (Khan et al. 2007).
Briefly expound on how microorganisms are crucial for income generation. How can Nigeria improve its potentiality in income generation using
microorganisms?
The second role is related to the second SDG of achieving zero hunger.
Fermented pickles, milk, cheese, soy sauce, yogurt as well as bread are important
foods that are directly or indirectly associated with microorganisms. In the same
